CMCS - Work Study

Our VA Work-Study student assistants are customer service representatives, assisting with the dissemination of general information regarding military benefits and/or services, and providing assistance to students with general inquiries about military benefits via phone, email, or in person.

  • Application is available in the form here.
  • See sample below. School site and work-study site must be listed as "Cal Poly Tech"
  • Submit the completed application below.  Do not email applications.

Applicants must be a current Cal Poly student using VA benefits:

  • enrolled at least three-quarter time
  • in your second quarter or beyond
  • have a significant understanding of federal, state and local resources. The best applicant is someone who uses the CMCS regularly and who has shown an ability and willingness to offer assistance to other military-connected students
  • must show up to their shifts on time and be available throughout their shift. Excessive tardiness and absences will result in dismissal and non-hiring in future quarters.
  • Cal Vet College Fee Waiver is not a VA program.

Applications can be submitted 45 days prior to the start of each quarter. Students must reapply every quarter. Students must certify their units for the upcoming quarter BEFORE an application for VA Work-Study can be submitted on their behalf. Ask questions here!

Applicants will be reviewed and prioritized based on the following standards:

  1. Disabled veterans have the highest priority
  2. Experience working in the CMCS: quality of work, club involvement, level of teamwork displayed, knowledge of CMCS policies and procedures, and ability to assist in planning and facilitating events in the CMCS
  3. Availability: students available for fewer hours will be prioritized below those who are available for crucial shifts
  4. Usage of the CMCS and familiarity with our mission and goals
  5. Availability to participate in the CMCS Leadership Advisory Board and Student Veterans and Dependents club to plan and work at events.
  6. Spring Quarter 2024: Availability to help with Open House (April 12-13).

Operating Hours: The CMCS is open daily from 8 am to 7 pm. Shifts are scheduled for each half hour. Travel Time: It's important to factor in travel time to and from classes when scheduling shifts. Punctuality: Repeated lateness will result in the cancellation of your contract. Consistent Scheduling: Shifts are scheduled for the same hours each week. Notification for Absences: If you need to miss a scheduled shift, you are required to notify your supervisor. Supervisor's Role: The supervisor will determine whether you need to find coverage for the assigned shift if you have to miss it.
