ReCHARGE with Strawberries - Screening Questionnaire

Currently Recruiting for the ReCHARGE with Strawberries Study!

Welcome to the ReCHARGE with Strawberries study website and thank you for your interest! This study is being conducted by Cal Poly and Cal Poly Humboldt faculty and students to evaluate the effectiveness of strawberries on heart health in postmenopausal women who have low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels 116 mg/dl (if you are unsure of your levels, we can check this for you at no cost to you if you meet the initial criteria for our study)

Participation in this study would last approximately 16-18 weeks, including two, 6-week diet intervention phases during which you would be asked to consume a strawberry or strawberry-flavored drink once daily. Prior to and between the 6-week diet interventions, you would be asked to follow a controlled diet for 2-3 weeks to "washout" any effects of specific foods that may mask the potential effect of the strawberry drinks. In order to participate, you must be willing to avoid or limit certain foods and beverages for the duration of the study and drink both strawberry beverages every day for 6-weeks each.

As a participant, you will also attend various health check appointments held on the Cal Poly campus, or at select satellite locations in the counties of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Humboldt, Fresno, and Tulare. All participants will receive FREE health checks including body weight assessment, resting blood pressure, blood tests for markers of heart and metabolic health, and personal diet assessments. On four separate occasions, you will visit a local clinic to have a small amount (~3-4 tbsp) of blood drawn. Lastly, you will be asked to track your diet and physical activity for 3 days during select weeks. For those who are able to complete our study needs, you would be compensated up to $350.00, and receive a free nutrition consultation with a Registered Dietitian or Dietetic intern and a summary of your individual lab results.

If you have any questions or would like to speak with a researcher, please contact your nearest research location. After receiving your email or phone call, a team member will respond to your email or return your call in 1-3 business days.

At this point we need to learn more about you so that we can determine if you will meet the criteria for this research project, including personal questions regarding your health. This questionnaire is confidential, and will only be used for the purposes of this study. You may exit this questionnaire at any time. If it is determined that you meet the criteria of this study, we will invite you to visit the Cal Poly campus, or one of our alternative sites, to learn more about the study.

*continue through screener; research staff will determine eligibility based on activity level described.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. It appears that you do NOT seem to meet the current eligibility requirements for this study. The research staff will review your responses and get back to you if they determine otherwise.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions; it appears that you fit our initial criteria. At this time, we would like to invite you to the Cal Poly campus, or one of our alternative sites, for further screening to confirm your final eligibility.

The first visit will include a check of your height and weight and a fasting blood test using a drop of blood from your finger. If you meet the eligibility requirements after this assessment, you will be instructed on how to record your food intake and activity levels for up to 3 days. A fecal (stool) sample kit will also be given to you with instructions on how to discreetly collect your sample. We will give you detailed information regarding the requirements of being a participant in our study and answer any questions that you may have.

Should you still fit within our criteria after the first visit, and are willing to continue, we will invite you back for the first “health check” that follows the first “washout” period. The second visit will include another blood glucose test and height and weight measurements with the addition of a waist circumference and blood pressure test. We will also collect the food intake and activity data from the 3 recorded days. The first fecal sample will also be collected on this visit. If at the end of this second visit, you completely fulfill our eligibility criteria, we will assign you to a treatment group and give you further instructions regarding your participation within your assigned group.

For the first visit, you will be given specific instructions and a parking permit.  If you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to call or email.
